News Advisory, May 17 / -- On April 30, 2005, the Gay Lesbian and Straight Educators Network (GLSEN) sponsored an event at Brookline (MA) High School where a booklet called Little Black Book: Queer in the 21st Century was distributed to middle and high schools students.

The book begins by telling students: "You have the right to enjoy sex without shame or stigma" and then launches into a description of sexual practices for youth to consider. "This is not the first time GLSEN has esposed young teens to sexually explicit materials under the guise of teaching tolerance," said Warren Throckmorton, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology at Grove City College and author of a report critiquing the GLSEN produced curriculum materials for public school.

"Contrary to public health warnings about the dangers of risky sexual behaviors, this booklet glorifies the riskiest of behaviors and then suggests that the students get tested for STDs every three to six months," observed Warren
Throckmorton, PhD, co-author of Health Education as Social Advocacy. "Public health officials are consistent in suggesting that teens delay sexual debut and reduce the number of partners as a means of fighting the epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases. In contrast, this booklet functions as a sexual how-to manual for teens minimizing the actual risks of contracting a potentially deadly sexually transmitted disease," Throckmorton added.

"It is truly scandalous that the public school system and GLSEN allowed this booklet to be available to children as young as 13. Surely, there are laws in Massachusetts that make it a crime to give such materials to minors," said Throckmorton.

Here are just some of the offensive material in this brochure; keep in mind this booklet was openly distributed at a high school where middle and high school aged students could pick it up.

-- There is full frontal nudity in this booklet with photos of men applying condoms.
-- Sexual profanity is used throughout the brochure
-- The assumption is that youth should have sex - abstinence is mentioned with the disparaging comment, "but how much fun is that?"
-- One side bar lists gay bars in the Boston area. Here are some liner notes describing this section and some of the gay bars.
- "Here is a list of Boston area bars and clubs for the discerning queer boy."
- CAMPUS/MANRAY establishment..."Dancing, young guys and those who like young guys"
- PARADISE bar..."Strippers dancing on the pool tables...porn on the television, the old, the young, something for everyone..."

These descriptions of bars suggest where adults can pick up minors for illegal sexual encounters.

Should the Boston police sex crimes unit thank this group for pointing out where sex offenses occur?

"I call on the proper authorities to investigate GLSEN, the school district, and the funding groups in connection with corrupting minors," Throckmorton added.
